Your First Week with Clear Aligners: What to Expect
By Dr. Maryam Tahir (BDS), Orthodontist at Aligno Lahore
The first week of clear aligner treatment is an adjustment period. Learn exactly what to expect, from initial discomfort and speech changes to practical tips that will make your first few days smooth and stress-free.
Day 1-2: Initial Adjustment
You may feel tightness and pressure as your teeth begin to move. This is completely normal and means the aligners are working. The discomfort is usually mild and manageable.
Speaking with Aligners
You might notice a slight lisp when you first start wearing aligners. This typically goes away within 2-3 days as your tongue adjusts to the trays.
Eating and Drinking
Remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. Brush your teeth before putting them back in. Keep your aligner case with you at all times.
Tips for a Smooth First Week
- Start wearing your first aligners in the evening or before bed
- Use aligner chewies to ensure proper seating
- Set reminders to put your aligners back in after meals
- Keep orthodontic wax handy for any edge irritation
